What types of Flood Protection are there?
Individual homes or blocks of property can generally
be protected in one of two ways,
1. BY PERIMETER PROTECTION
Using existing or new landscaped low brick walls
and embankments perimeter protection can be acheived for gardens,
garages, driveways as well as your premises.
These defences are permanently in place protecting
your property against floodwater. They are resistant to floating
debris damage and require no set up time following Flood Warnings.
Once built you are always protected. Perimeter protection
normally involves survey work by us before the scheme can
be designed.
We always design the protection height to be the
level of the worst flood plus 300mm. Permanent protection
schemes of this type typically cost between £1.5k to £19k
(detached house with medium garden) to build depending on
the actual area to be protected and the height of protection.
Compare these overall costs to the Insurance excesses of £10,000
that we are now hearing about and to re-furbishment costs
of £30,000 plus . When you compare the overall design and
building costs to that of a typical family holiday and/or
a new car you can see how little it really costs to protect
your property for years to come.
Financially and emotionally it makes sense.
2. PROPERTY/STRUCTURE PROTECTION
Protect the actual structure by using flood boards
or similar etc. on the doors and airbricks.
Note that these have to be put in place whenever
you have a flood warning. The property is unprotected if these
are not fitted in time! A rough cost guide for protecting
the structure of a medium sized detached house that was flooded
to say 300mm depth of water, using off the shelf items, is
£800 to £1700+VAT depending on the number of doors and other
openings needing protection and the quaality of the products
chosen. These prices are based on purchase and fitting of
flood boards etc.
